SpaceX has barely finished ringing the bell on the biggest IPO in market history, and it is already testing how far investor enthusiasm can stretch. The company’s first major public-market move is a $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the maker of AI coding tool Cursor. That is not a side deal. It is a statement that SpaceX wants to be valued not only as a launch, satellite, and space infrastructure company, but as an artificial intelligence platform with its own software and compute ecosystem.
The timing is aggressive. The deal was announced just days after SpaceX began trading under the ticker SPCX, and it immediately shifted the debate around the stock. Traders who first bought the IPO for Starship, Starlink, and space dominance now have to underwrite a much broader story: rockets plus satellites plus AI infrastructure plus developer software.
That is a powerful narrative in a market still willing to pay up for AI growth. It is also a risky one. SpaceX is using richly valued stock to buy a fast-growing, heavily funded startup at a premium price, while its own AI division has been under pressure from leadership turnover, product controversies, and legal risk.

Why SpaceX Wants Cursor
The strategic logic is simple: SpaceX wants more control over its AI stack. Cursor gives it a front-end product used by developers, while SpaceX’s AI operation, built around xAI, gives it access to compute, models, and data center infrastructure. The combination could allow SpaceX to connect AI coding tools with large-scale GPU capacity, including the Colossus data center infrastructure tied to xAI.
That matters because AI is no longer just about chatbots. The companies drawing the highest valuations are often those that control multiple layers of the stack: chips, data centers, models, enterprise software, and user-facing tools. Cursor gives SpaceX an immediate position in software tooling, one of the most important areas of AI monetization. Developers are early adopters, heavy users, and often sticky customers once a tool becomes part of daily work.
The deal also gives SpaceX a way to make its AI infrastructure look less like a cost center and more like a growth engine. AI compute is capital intensive. Data centers, GPUs, power contracts, and cooling systems all demand huge spending before profits are visible. If Cursor can drive demand for that compute, SpaceX has a stronger argument that its AI buildout is not just speculative infrastructure, but a revenue-generating platform.
There is another angle. SpaceX has spent years convincing markets that it can turn very hard engineering into scalable economics. Launch costs fell, satellite deployment accelerated, and Starlink turned space assets into a recurring subscription business. With Cursor, SpaceX is trying to repeat that pattern in software: take a fast-growing product, plug it into deeper infrastructure, and build a larger platform around it.
The Market Loved It, Then Quickly Reconsidered
The initial reaction was explosive. SPCX shares climbed to an intraday record of $225.64 after the acquisition announcement. That move extended a stunning post-IPO rally from around $135 to the record high within a week. For momentum traders, it looked like the perfect AI-plus-space trade.
Then reality pushed back. More hawkish Federal Reserve commentary on June 17 hit high-valuation growth stocks, and SPCX dropped as much as 5.6% intraday. The stock moved back into the $187 to $192 zone, and recently traded near $191.82 after sitting at $201.80 the prior day. That is a sharp round trip for a newly public mega-cap story stock.
The chart now has a clear battleground. The $192 area is emerging as an important support zone. If buyers defend it, the market may continue to treat the Cursor deal as a long-term AI catalyst. The xAI Problem SpaceX Must Fix
