The S&P 500 is still sold as a broad proxy for U.S. corporate America, but its risk profile increasingly resembles a concentrated growth portfolio wrapped in an index fund. If that stock continues to outperform, underperformance is not a sign of poor security selection but a mechanical result of risk controls. The right conclusion is not to abandon the S&P 500. It is to understand what risk is embedded in the index and decide whether that risk is intentional. Investors should monitor three indicators that often matter more than daily price action.
